A player should never “automatically semi-bluff”
All the players know about semi-bluff, however very few know how to use semi-bluff while playing. There are lots of evidences that all players semi-bluff. Whenever a player will flush draw or flop an open ended straight draw, he will bet or raise. It is called building up of a pot in the hope to complete one’s draw or simply betting.
In order to semi-bluff, a player should have some chance of winning the pot by betting right there and then. If all the players have folded their cards when the player bets then semi-bluff strategy is succeeded. When none of the draws is successful then it is better to pick up a small pot when the condition is appropriate.
Basic guideline to semi-bluff is to do it when required and selectively rather than automatically. Here are some useful guidelines:
• There are more chances of a semi-bluff to succeed when the flop is Kh-7h-3d. But there are fewer chances for the semi-bluff to succeed when the flop is Kh-Qh-10d. It is advisable to semi-bluff on the first flop not on the second one.
• There are more chances for a semi-bluff to succeed when there are fewer opponents.
• A player should manipulate his opponents with the semi-bluff by using changes in the board. For example, if you have Kh-5h on the big blind and no other player raised preflop. The flop is Kd-9h-4c. A player in middle position will bet and you should call. All other players will fold. The turn is an Ah. Player in the middle position will bet again. In this situation you may want to rise as a semi-bluff. Chances are higher that he has a king with a good kicker (K-J). And we can think that he doesn’t have A-K as he didn’t come up before the raise. As a result the Ace would certainly scare him and also it improves your position that a 5 on the pot would also help you win it.
• There is a good possibility that you semi-bluff and opponent will fold if he doesn’t have an ace in the hole.
• A player should not semi-bluff in a situation where flop is 5h-8h-9d. There are several hands, which can be used for calling this flop, which would also include the middle pair, “gut shot draws” and two over cards. On this sort of flop semi-bluff will also not work.
• If you have 8s-9s and the flop is Ks-Kd-5s, there is a good chance that semi-bluff will be effective.
